Organic Baby Foods: the Healthy Start

Defined Tag:

Organic baby foods are a logical next step for anyone who is interested in eating organically themselves. They have slowly gained in popularity over the past several years, and they are rapidly becoming the "in thing" with people who make enough money to be able to afford them. And why shouldn't they be? Our babies are more susceptible than any of us to the chemicals, additives, preservatives, hormones, pesticides and herbicides floating around in so much of our food today. It only makes sense that, out of all the healthy food choices that exist today, baby food would be one of them.

So should you buy no-chem food for your baby? There are arguments both for and against it, actually. On the one hand, baby food is expensive enough to begin with. Adding the extra cost of buying organic pushes it out of the price range of many young parents. And there are those who suggest that buying organic is less important for babies than you might think. Advocates, on the other hand, are quick to wax eloquent on the negative effects of our food's additives even on adults; this effect is, of course, far more pronounced in our little ones than in adults.

In the end, the decision about whether or not to give your baby organic food is very much a personal one. In at least one area, however, there is growing evidence that organic may be worth the extra cost. Researchers are slowly beginning to find possible links between preservatives, additives, and other chemicals in foods and ADD or ADHD. The link is still tenuous at best, but if you have the extra money and you are concerned about your child developing ADD or ADHD later on in life, it may be worth the peace of mind to buy organic baby foods for your little one.
